שַׁמַּאי הַזָּקֵן היה אב בית הדין האחרון בתקופת הזוגות ואחד מבני הזוג הלל ושמאי. ידוע בתור בר פלוגתא של הלל הזקן, וכנגד האסכולה של הלל ייסד את האסכולה שלו, אסכולת בית שמאי, אשר שלטה תקופה מסוימת בסנהדרין, אך לא האריכה ימים אחרי המרד הגדול. שמאי והלל מכונים בספרות חז"ל בתואר "אבות העולם".
