רבי יוסי בן החוטף אפרתי

Rabbi Yosi ben HaChotef Efrati

Rabbi Yosi ben HaChotef Efrati — a tanna of Eretz Yisrael of the fourth generation, talmid of Rabbi Yishmael, mentioned once in the Mishnah in masechet Kilayim.

תּוֹלְדוֹת

Rabbi Yosi ben HaChotef Efrati (רבי יוסי בן החוטף אפרתי) was a tanna of Eretz Yisrael in the fourth generation of tannaim. He is mentioned only once in the Mishnah, in masechet Kilayim. In some manuscripts his name appears as ben HaOtef or ben HaItuf, and in the Talmud Yerushalmi as Efratim.

The Yerushalmi brings that he was a talmid of Rabbi Yishmael in Rabbi Yishmael’s last years. The teshuvot of the Rema MiPano (siman 102) explain his father’s name, HaChotef (the one who grabs): he would grab mitzvot from the marketplace, and he is mentioned for praise on that account. Others explain that the name recalls some event in which he grabbed a particular thing, or that he spoke in a hurried way.

The Yerushalmi also mentions a man named Yosef Efrati who served Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi, and he is most likely the Rabbi Yosi named in masechet Kilayim.
