הרב יודן בן ישמעאל

Rabbi Yudan ben Rabbi Yishmael, whose name is also given as Yehuda, was an amora of Eretz Yisrael in the third generation of the amoraim. His name has been connected with the Yudan ben Yishmael of an Aramaic inscription found on a seat in the shul at Korazim, which reads that Yudan ben Yishmael should be remembered for good, for he made the columns and the steps from his own money. On that reading he was a wealthy man who gave of his own funds for the building.

Rabbi Yudan is mentioned a number of times in the Yerushalmi and in the Midrash Rabbah. In Berachot it is told of him that he was so absorbed in learning that his tallit would slip from him and he would not notice. The Yerushalmi also relates that he asked his meturgeman (translator) to say, after rendering his derasha to the tzibbur, the tefillah of Rabbi Chiya: may it be Your will, Hashem Elokeinu v’Elokei avoteinu, that You place in our hearts to do complete teshuvah before You, so that we not be shamed before our fathers in the World to Come.
