שְׁנַיִם מִקְרָא וְאֶחָד תַּרְגּוּם

The talmudic source for the mitzvah of Shnayim Mikra is found in the Babylonian Talmud (gemarah), Berachot 8a. Rabbi Huna bar Yehuda quotes Rabbi Ami: “A person should always complete his Torah portions with the congregation: reading the text twice and the translation once (shnayim mikra ve’echad targum).”

This weekly practice is later codified into halacha in the Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 285:1.

Each week we are required to read the original Hebrew of the Torah portion twice, and the Aramaic translation (traditionally Targum Onkelos). Some say the translation can also be Rashi or another main commentary on the parsha.
