Rav Avin Nagra — Avin the carpenter — was a Babylonian amora of the second or third generation and a contemporary of Rav Huna. He earned his livelihood in carpentry, and it is from his trade that his name comes. The Gemara brings that he was exceedingly careful in the mitzvah of the Shabbat lights, and when Rav Huna saw his exacting conduct he said that two tzaddikim would come forth from his house. So it was: his two sons, Rav Idi bar Avin — the rebbi of Rav Papa — and Rav Chiya bar Avin were among the great men of the fourth generation of the amoraim of Bavel.
רבי אבין נגרא (הנגר) היה אמורא בבלי מהדור השני או השלישי, בן דורו של רב הונא, ואביהם של רב אידי בר אבין ורב חייא בר אבין. עסק לפרנסתו בנגרות ונקרא על שם עיסוקו.
Rabbi Abin Naggara was a second- or third-generation Babylonian Amora, a contemporary of Rav Huna. He was the father of Rav Idi b. Abin and Rav Hiyya b. Abin. He made his livelihood as a carpenter and was named for his profession.
