רבי אבין נגרא

Rabbi Avin Nagra

Rav Avin Nagra — the carpenter whose care with the Shabbat lights moved Rav Huna to foretell two tzaddikim from his house.

Biography

Rav Avin Nagra — Avin the carpenter — was a Babylonian amora of the second or third generation and a contemporary of Rav Huna. He earned his livelihood in carpentry, and it is from his trade that his name comes. The Gemara brings that he took great care with the mitzvah of lighting the Shabbat candles, and Rav Huna, seeing how exacting he was, said that two tzaddikim would come forth from his house. So it was: his two sons, Rav Idi bar Avin — the rebbi of Rav Papa — and Rav Chiya bar Avin were among the great men of the fourth generation of the amoraim of Bavel.
