רבי דוד אופנהיים היה פוסק ומרא דאתרא של הקהילות היהודיות בערים ניקלשבורג ופראג. נחשב לרב משפיע במיוחד בגין קשריו עם שליטי הקיסרות בארצו. חיבר כעשרים ספרים בהלכה ובאגדה, בהם ספר השו"ת "נשאל דוד".
