Rav Abba bar Acha was an amora of Eretz Yisrael who went down to Bavel. He often brings teachings in the name of ‘Rabbeinu’ — our teacher — and it is on that one word that the discussion about him turns: some understand him to mean Rebbi, and others to mean Rav. Rav Ilai brings teachings in his name.
במקום שהמסורות חלוקות. Because it is unclear whether the ’Rabbeinu’ he cites is Rebbi or Rav, sources differ over whether he belongs to the first or the second generation of amoraim.
