הרב נחמן מהורודנקא

Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka (רבי נחמן מהורודנקא), who lived from about 1680 to 1765, was an acharon and a chasid of the first generation of the chasidic movement, one of the closest talmidim and friends of the Baal Shem Tov, who called him the “ne’eman beito” (the trusted one of his household). He was the grandfather of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.

By one tradition he was born in Zholkva in Galicia. His father, Rabbi Yitzchak, came from a family descended from the Maharal of Prague; his mother was the daughter of Rabbi Avraham, rav of Novhardok. As a young man he learned in the kloiz (house of study) of Brody, where he became a friend of Rabbi Nachman of Kosov and Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Bar, and he learned Torah while keeping apart from worldly matters, with fasts and self-affliction. After his marriage his brother-in-law, Rabbi Chaim of Horodenka, drew him toward the Baal Shem Tov, and a dream that he took as a sign to go to him also moved him. He became one of the Baal Shem Tov’s first supporters, and his way of serving Hashem changed through the Baal Shem Tov’s teaching. After his first wife was niftar he married the sister of Rabbi Yitzchak of Drohobych.

He was known among the Jews of Russia for his devotion to the mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim (redeeming captives). He married his son to a granddaughter of the Baal Shem Tov, and from that match came Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.

He then went up to Eretz Yisrael together with Rabbi Menachem of Premishlan and others, reaching the port of Haifa in 1764. He lived first in Tzfat and then settled in Tiberias. He was niftar in Tiberias on 2 Tammuz 5525 (1765) and was buried in Tiberias, in the old Jewish cemetery there.
