רב הונא בר יהודה

Rav Huna bar Yehuda was an amora and a talmid of Rav Yehuda and of Rav Sheshet, whose Torah he quotes often. He appears to be the same as Rav Huna the son of Rav Yehuda — talmid of his own father, talmid of Rav Sheshet and friend of Rava — as Zev Yavetz writes; his name in the Gemara, Huna bar Yehuda, itself hints that his father was a chacham.

He and Rava, both of whom learned before Rav Sheshet, discussed halacha together, and at times they differed over what their rebbe had held. So in the case of a moredet: one approach reduces her ketubah by seven dinarim for every week she rebels, while the beit din works meanwhile to persuade her to return to the obligations of marriage; the other holds there is no point in drawn-out pressure and persuasion, and fixes a term of four weeks in which her rebellion is announced in the batei knesset and batei midrash on Shabbat — when every Jew of the city is gathered, including those at their work all week — the beit din informing her that at the end of those four weeks she forfeits the whole of her ketubah, even were it as large as a hundred maneh. Rava had received from Rav Sheshet that she is to be won over gently and fined a reasonable seven dinarim a week; Rav Huna bar Yehuda had received that after four weeks she loses it all.

Rava was a guest in his house more than once. One motzaei Shabbat Rava made havdalah there and said the berachah of borei minei besamim before the berachah of me’orei ha’esh; Rav Huna bar Yehuda challenged him from the mishnah in Berachot, where Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel alike put the candle before the besamim. Rava answered that this is the version of Rabbi Meir, whereas Rabbi Yehuda says they never differed that mazon comes first and havdalah last, and that their dispute was only over the light and the besamim: Beit Shammai say the light and then the besamim, Beit Hillel say the besamim and then the light.
