תּוֹלְדוֹת
Rabbi Yoav Yehoshua Weingarten (יואב יהושע וינגרטן) was an acharon of Poland, a chasid and posek who lived from 1845 to 1922. He served as rav of Kintzk and is known by his sefarim Chelkat Yoav and Kava DeKashyata.
He was the son of Rabbi Natan Neta and Rivka. As a boy he was diligent and quick to understand, and while still young he was sent to learn under Rabbi Zev Nachum Bornsztain, the Agudat Ezov, rav of Biala Podlaska, whose son was Rabbi Avraham Bornsztain, author of the teshuvot Avnei Nezer. He also traveled to learn under Rabbi Avraham Landau of Tshechanov, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Alter of Gur, the Chiddushei HaRim, and Rabbi Chanoch Henich of Alexander, and from them he took both Torah and the way of chasidut.
He married Sarah Malka, daughter of Yaakov Handelsman of Radom, a chasid of Kotzk, and after the wedding lived in Radom supported by his father-in-law. He kept up a correspondence with the Avnei Nezer, whom he had known since their years with his father, accepted him as his rebbe, and signed his letters as his chasid. He later moved to Nasielsk, where the Avnei Nezer lived, and became his neighbor; the Avnei Nezer appointed him moreh tzedek (halachic authority) of the town.
In 1883 he became rav and rosh yeshiva of Lutomiersk. In 1889 he was appointed rav of Gostynin, where he also opened a yeshiva and headed it, raising hundreds of talmidim. In 1894 he became rav of Kintzk and served there until he was niftar on 4 Cheshvan 5683 (1922). His sefarim are Chelkat Yoav, teshuvot, and Kava DeKashyata, a collection of 103 sharp questions on the Gemara that are left unanswered; the number is hinted in the gematria of the word kava (קבא), 103.
