רבי מני בר פטיש

Rabbi Mani bar Patish was an amora of the second generation of Eretz Yisrael and a talmid of Rabbi Yannai; Rav Aharon Hyman holds that he was the gadol hador in the days of Rabbi Yochanan. In the Ashkenazic pronunciation his name is said with a kamatz — Mani.

The Talmud Bavli keeps his teachings both in his own name and in the names of his rebbeim, in halacha and in aggada. Best known is his word against anger: whoever grows angry, even if greatness has been decreed for him from Heaven, they bring him down from it. In hilchot shomrim, Rav Soloveitchik understood his position to be that a watchman who guarded as the law requires is thereby exempt from paying, rather than that the root of his obligation is uprooted.
