רבי ינאי

Rabbi Yannai is among the most frequently cited amoraim in the aggadic and midrashic literature drawn upon in our library, appearing across the Tanchuma-type expositions on the Torah (Shemot, Yitro, Bo, Tzav, Terumah, Kedoshim, Chukat, Masei, Pinchas, Shoftim, Ki Tavo, Eikev) as well as in Leviticus Rabbah, Esther Rabbah, Kohelet Rabbah, and Bereshit-related teachings. He is recorded both under his own name and through the teachings of his yeshiva (“the school of Rabbi Yannai”), and the patronymic form “Rabbi Yannai b’Rabbi Shimon” appears as well.

The passages preserve him as a master of aggadic and ethical teaching. He is remembered for vivid parables — most famously the encounter with the peddler crying out “who wishes to buy the elixir of life?” who then expounds the verse “who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil” (Vayikra Rabbah, cited in Orchot Tzadikim), and for his sharp maxim “woe to him who has no courtyard yet makes a gate for the courtyard.” His statements range over the gravity of unfulfilled vows (one’s ledger is reviewed before Hashem), the discreet giving of charity, the proper placement of tefillin (“where the infant’s skull is soft”), and aggadic expansions on the fruitfulness of Israel in Egypt and the dreams of Pharaoh.

The cited material thus characterizes him chiefly as a darshan and ethical teacher whose teachings on speech, charity, vows, and the meaning of Scripture were preserved and quoted by later compilers.
