רב יהודה אחוה דרב סלא חסידא

Rav Yehuda brother of Rav Sala Chasida

Rav Yehuda, brother of Rav Sala Chasida — an amora of Bavel who brings words of aggadah heard from Eliyahu HaNavi, and who advised Rav Huna to examine his deeds when his wine soured.

תּוֹלְדוֹת

Rav Yehuda, brother of Rav Sala Chasida (רב יהודה אחוה דרב סלא חסידא), was an amora of Bavel. He is mentioned a handful of times in the Talmud, mainly for words of aggadah that he heard from Eliyahu HaNavi, among them the teaching “lo tirtach v’lo techtei” – do not become angry, and you will not come to sin.

The Gemara tells that four hundred barrels of Rav Huna’s wine turned sour. Rav Huna told Rav Yehuda and the chachamim, and they advised him to examine his deeds. When Rav Huna asked whether they suspected him of wrongdoing, they answered with a question of their own: did he suspect HaKadosh Baruch Hu of punishing a man for nothing?

The story shows that Rav Yehuda already held high standing among the chachamim in the days of Rav Huna, of the second generation of the amoraim of Bavel. He was most likely a young man then and Rav Huna old, since the Gemara also has Rav Yehuda putting a halachic question to Abaye, of the fourth generation. That question concerned moving a pair of sandals that served sometimes him and sometimes his son, which suggests he was poor. He most likely lived in Nehardea.

He is known by his brother’s name, and the brother carries the title Chasida, which shows that Rav Sala was an important chacham in his own right. Nothing more is known of Rav Sala except that his son, Rav Yosef, was also a chacham.

במקום שהמסורות חלוקות. Another reading of the Gemara has Rav Huna turning to Rav Adda bar Ahava, not to Rav Yehuda, about his wine; on that reading Rav Yehuda's generation is less certain, somewhere between that of Rav Huna and that of Abaye.

רב יהודה אחוה דרב סלא חסידא היה אמורא בבלי. מוזכר מספר פעמים בתלמוד, בעיקר כשמוזכרים דברי אגדה ששמע מפי אליהו הנביא.
