רב עמרם גאון

Rav Amram bar Sheshna, Rav Amram Gaon (d. c. 4635/875), stood at the head of the yeshiva of Sura in Bavel, and gave klal Yisrael the sefer from which its tefillah flows to this day. A talmid of Rav Natronai Gaon, he was honored with the title gaon already in his teacher’s lifetime, and upon Rav Natronai’s passing led the yeshiva of Sura for close to two decades. The Shulchan Aruch / Tur quote extensively from his siddur as proof of the earliest recorded customs/minhagim of organized davening.

His name lives in the Seder Rav Amram Gaon — the first complete arrangement of the tefillot of the entire year ever set down. Written as one long teshuvah to a kehillah in Spain that had asked for the order of tefillot and berachot, it gave not only the text of the tefillot for weekday, Shabbat and moadim, but a running fabric of halachot from the Gemara and the geonim governing the tefillah and its practices. Upon this foundation both great families of nusach were built — the rites of Sefarad and of Ashkenaz alike descend from it — and the siddurim of Rav Saadia Gaon and the Rambam followed the path it opened. The rishonim of every land quote it constantly; more than a thousand years later, every siddur in the world is its descendant.

Beside the Seder stand his responsa — some hundred and twenty teshuvot, many gathered in the collection Shaarei Tzedek — which show a posek of balance and daat: wary of needless stringency and of superstition, and exacting in the methodology of the Talmud. He was among the greatest of the geonim before Rav Saadia, and one of the most consequential.
