Biography
Rav Dimi was an amora of the third and fourth generations, one of the nechutei — the chachamim who carried the teachings of Eretz Yisrael down to Bavel. He brought the rulings he had heard from Rabbi Yochanan, and from Ze’iri as well, to the yeshivot of Bavel, and the Gemara opens many a sugya with the words “when Rav Dimi came.” He was on close terms with Abaye, who addressed him as a colleague. Rav Nachman, of whom he asked a great many questions, once answered him that he would reply when Rav Dimi had eaten a kor of salt.
Among his teachings: whoever visits the sick causes him to live, and whoever does not visit the sick causes him to die.
Where traditions differ. Sefer Yuchasin and Seder HaDorot identify him with Rav Dimi bar Yosef, but Rav Aharon Hyman held this to be an error, since Rav Dimi bar Yosef learned under Rav and Shmuel while this Rav Dimi was a talmid of Rav Nachman. ; Rav Hyman held he was among the younger talmidim of Rabbi Yochanan, being a talmid of Rabbi Yirmiyah, who learned from Rabbi Zeira.
