רב אחא בר אדא

Rav Acha bar Ada was a Babylonian amora whose life reached across the second, third and fourth generations of the amoraim of Bavel. He learned from Rav — so his son Rav Pappa gives over, bringing a teaching in his father’s name that his father had heard from Rav — but the body of his Torah he received from Rav Hamnuna. For a short while he went up to Eretz Yisrael, and from there he brought reports back to the chachamim of Bavel; one of them is that in the West they divide the verse Vayomer Hashem el Moshe hinei anochi ba eilecha be’av he’anan into three pesukim.

He lived to a ripe old age, and his hand shook when he wrote. Masechet Bava Batra tells that men sought to counterfeit his trembling script and his signature on a document by a certain technique, and Rava uncovered the plot, because he remembered that he had not signed that document in front of Rav Acha bar Ada, out of the respect due him as the elder. Even so, since Rava was the gadol hador, it was to Rava that Rav Acha brought his own questions.
