רבה בר עולא

Rabbah bar Ulla was a Babylonian amora of the fourth and fifth generations. He debated halachah with Rav Kahana, Abaye and Rava. The Gemara mentions that at the wedding of his son — or, by another reading, his daughter — the old custom was kept and a special oil was smeared on the heads of the talmidim. Although he was of the same age as Abaye and Rava, he spoke to Rav Bibi bar Abaye with deference, addressing him as “Rabbi.”
