רב נחמיה בריה דרב יוסף

Rav Nechemia bereh deRav Yosef

Rav Nechemia bereh deRav Yosef was an Amora who appears across the Talmud ruling on practical halachah, especially questions of kashrut and treifot.

Biography

Rav Nechemia bereh deRav Yosef was an amora whose rulings appear throughout the Talmud, often on matters of practical halachah. In Bechorot 9b he is recorded redeeming a firstborn donkey with vegetables of equal value, illustrating a dispute over whether the Torah’s stringency requires redemption specifically with a lamb. In Chullin 48a he is brought examining a lung’s fitness by testing it in lukewarm water, a tradition over which later sages debated the exact case to which his ruling applied.

He also dealt with cases of monetary and family law. In Bava Batra 66b and Ketubot 69a he sent instructions to Rabbah bereh deRav Huna Zuti in Nehardea regarding how a woman’s claim should be handled and how the tenth of the estate due to a daughter should be collected. In Beitzah 28a he relates an incident from when he stood before Rava, and in Shabbat 50b he comments on the composition of the cleansing paste known as barda.

Where traditions differ. Some passages cite "Rav Nechemia bar Yosef" and "Rav Nechemia bereh deRav Yehoshua"; it is not certain all refer to the same sage. ; Moed Katan 19b records the teaching in the name of either Rav Nechemia bereh deRav Yosef or Rav Nechemia bereh deRav Yehoshua.
