About the Derashot HaRan on TorahSages
The Derashot HaRan are twelve derashot by the Ran, Rabbeinu Nissim of Gerona (c. 1320–1376), the author of the peirush printed around the Rif. Each derush opens with a pasuk and builds from it into a question of emunah, drawing on the Gemara and the midrashim: how the world was created, what nevuah is, why a person must follow the chachamim even when it seems to him that they have erred, and how the judgment of the Sanhedrin stands beside the judgment of the melech. The derashot are short and closely reasoned; they are learned in yeshivot, and later poskim and darshanim quote them often.
