About the Sefer HaYashar on TorahSages
Sefer HaYashar is a sefer of musar and avodat Hashem in eighteen shaarim. It has long been attributed to Rabbeinu Tam, Rabbi Yaakov ben Meir (c. 1100–1171), the grandson of Rashi, but many hold that another author wrote it; it is not the same as Rabbeinu Tam’s Sefer HaYashar of chiddushim on the Gemara. It opens with the purpose for which the world was created and leads from it to avodat Hashem as the purpose of a person’s life. It then goes through emunah, the love and fear of Hashem, what holds a person back from avodat Hashem and what brings him to it, and teshuvah, and closes with the difference between the tzaddik and the rasha. It is learned as a sefer of musar in its own right.
