Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra (1089–1164) of Tudela wrote his peirush on the Chumash on the road — in Italy, Provence, northern France and England — after leaving Spain. He reads the pasuk through dikduk and the plain meaning of the words, states in his introduction which ways of explaining he will not take, and says the rest in the fewest words he can, so that “the wise will understand.” On Shemot he left two editions, the short and the long.
