The Ramban — Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman of Gerona (1194–1270) — wrote his peirush on the Chumash late in life and finished it in Eretz Yisrael, after he arrived there in 1267. He argues the peshat through, weighs Rashi and Ibn Ezra by name, draws the lesson in emunah and middot from the narrative, and in the passages marked “al derech ha’emet” hints at the sod (deeper meaning). Its introduction, in verse, sets out what the Torah is before a word of it is explained.
