The Rashbam — Rabbi Shmuel ben Meir (c. 1085–1158), Rashi’s grandson and one of the first Baalei HaTosafot — wrote the peirush on the Chumash that follows the peshat all the way, even where the midrash his grandfather brought says otherwise. He records that he discussed this with Rashi, who told him that had he the time he would write new peirushim according to the peshat that is renewed every day. The result is the sharpest reading of the plain sense in the Mikraot Gedolot.
