Rashi — Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki of Troyes (1040–1105) — wrote the peirush on the Chumash that every learner opens first. He gives the peshat of the pasuk and brings the midrash only where the words themselves ask for it, in a few plain lines that a child can read and a talmid chacham keeps returning to. It is learned with the parsha every week, and the Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chayim 285) counts Rashi’s peirush together with the Targum for Shnayim Mikra.
