Rabbi Ovadia Sforno (c. 1475–1550) of Cesena, a physician who taught Torah in Rome and Bologna, wrote a peirush on the Chumash that is short, clear and to the point. He explains the peshat and, with it, the purpose: why the Torah tells this here, what Hashem asks of a person in it, and how the events of the parsha lead to one another. It is the mefaresh many turn to when the pasuk is understood and the question is what it is for.
