Biography
Rabbi Berechya is an aggadic amora preserved in the classical Midrash and quoted extensively in later interpretive literature such as the Akeidat Yitzchak. He appears chiefly as a master of aggadic interpretation, often unfolding the meaning of scriptural verses through parable (mashal) and through close attention to the sequence of the Torah’s passages.
In the cited material he is recorded transmitting teachings in the name of Rabbi Levi, as in the midrash on Vayikrah where he likens Israel and the Kohen to figures entrusted with a physician’s amulet (Vayikra Rabbah).
רבי ברכיה היה מגדולי חכמי האגדה בדור הרביעי לאמוראי ארץ ישראל. רוב מאמריו עוסקים באגדה ורק מאמרים בודדים בהלכה מצויים ממנו. במדרשים שמו של רבי ברכיה נפוץ ביותר. לעומת זאת בתלמוד הבבלי הוא מופיע פעמים בודדות בלבד.
R. Berekiah was an Amora of the Land of Israel, of the fourth generation of the Amora era. He is known for his work on the Aggadah, and there are many of his statements there, and many statements he delivered in the authority of other sages.
