רבי אפטוריקי

Rabbi Aptoriki

Rabbi Aptoriki — early amora, most likely of Eretz Yisrael, with only two statements in the Talmud Bavli, one of them on a klal and prat that stand apart from each other.

Biography

Rabbi Aptoriki was an amora mentioned only a few times in the Talmud Bavli, and little is known about his life. He was most likely an amora of Eretz Yisrael rather than of Bavel, since the Talmud calls him “Rabbi,” the usual title for the amoraim of Eretz Yisrael, and not “Rav,” the title used for the amoraim of Bavel.

His generation is worked out from the sugya in masechet Menachot, where Rav Adda bar Ahavah raises a difficulty against a chiddush of Rabbi Aptoriki about a klal and a prat (a general term and a specific term in a pasuk) that stand at a distance from one another. Since Rav Adda bar Ahavah belonged to the first and second generations, Rabbi Aptoriki would be an early amora, perhaps of the first generation and at the latest of the second.

The Talmud brings only two statements in his name; one of them appears in masechet Zevachim and again in masechet Chullin.

Where traditions differ. The Ri in Tosafot to Kiddushin and Rashi in Kiddushin understand Rav Adda bar Ahavah differently, which would allow Rabbi Aptoriki to have lived as late as the fifth generation of amoraim.
