רב יצחק בר שמואל בר מרתא

Rav Yitzchak bar Shmuel bar Marta

Rav Yitzchak bar Shmuel bar Marta — foremost talmid of Rav, in whose name many of Rav's teachings are brought in the Talmud Bavli; teacher of Rabbi Zeira and Rabbah bar bar Chanah.

Biography

Rav Yitzchak bar Shmuel bar Marta was an amora of Bavel of the second and third generations. He was the son of Rav Shmuel bar Marta, who was most likely a cousin of Rav.

He was the foremost talmid of Rav, who had also been his father’s teacher, and many of Rav’s teachings in the Talmud Bavli are brought in his name. He was sent to Netzivin, and it was he who brought back to Rav and Shmuel the news that the oil of non-Jews had been permitted, which he heard from Rabbi Simlai in the name of Rabbi Yehudah Nesiah.

He was still young when Rav and Shmuel passed away. Like the other talmidim of Rav he went to learn before Rav Huna. He also learned from other amoraim of the second generation, Rav Kahana and Rav Nachman. Among his own talmidim were Rabbi Zeira, Rabbi Abba and Rabbah bar bar Chanah.
