Biography
Rabbi Zeira was an amora active in Babylon and later in Israel, whose teachings are preserved across a wide range of the literature of Chazal and later works. Rabbi Zeira was Babylonian-born who emigrated to the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael), where he spent the vast majority of his adult life and became a leading third-generation Israeli Amora. He features prominently in a gemara in Ketubot, where he argues with Rav Yehuda about the value of living in Israel even in times of impurity, vs. living in Bavel.
He appears frequently in halachic discussions in the Talmud — for example in tractate Niddah, where he resolves apparent contradictions in the laws of ritual impurity, and the binding force of the vows of a young person. He is also cited transmitting teachings in the name of others, such as the explanation of the two oaths administered to the sotah, given in the name of Rav.
