Rami bar Abba was an amora of Bavel in the sixth generation. He is remembered for a question in the halachot of building a shul: he wished to put up a new shul on a different site, using the bricks and the beams of an old one. The halacha does not allow a shul to be taken down before its replacement has been built, lest the new one never be built at all — and his question was whether the case is different where the very materials of the old building go into the new. He put it to Rav Papa and then to Rav Huna ben Yehoshua — in another version, to Rav Papi and then to Rav Huna ben Tachlifa — and both of them forbade it to him.
The Sheiltot of Rav Achai of Shabcha states that Rami bar Abba was the father-in-law of Rav Ashi.
במקום שהמסורות חלוקות. The sources name two amoraim called Rami bar Abba; the father-in-law of Rav Ashi is most likely this later one. The names of the two sages he asked are given differently in different versions.
