רב פפי

Rav Papi was a Babylonian amora whose rulings appear throughout the Talmud, often transmitting teachings in the name of Rava (e.g., on usury (ribit), nedarim, and matters of faith), and recorded in dialogue with contemporaries such as Rav Papa. He is cited repeatedly in tractates Chullin and Avodah Zarah, where he addresses the laws of ritual slaughter and treifot (such as the anatomy of the esophagus and the condition of a dried lung), the kashering of vessels, and the permissibility of items handled by non-Jews.

His teachings also extend to questions of menstrual purity (Niddah), redemption-related law and tithing (Bekhorot), monetary and evidentiary matters (Shevuot, Bava Batra), and judicial procedure (Sanhedrin). Several later sages, including Rav Ashi, recall what was discussed “when we were in the beis medrash of Rav Papi” (bei Rav Papi), and a domestic account in Chullin notes that his wife was the daughter of Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha. His name appears as well in the aggadic-midrashic material of Vayikra Rabbah.
