About the Cheshbon HaNefesh on TorahSages

Cheshbon HaNefesh was written by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Lefin of Satanov (1749–1826) and first printed in 1808. It is a practical method for working on the middot by keeping a written daily account. The author sets out thirteen middot, each with a short saying to keep it in mind, and teaches to take one middah at a time for a week, marking each evening on a chart where one fell short in it; the whole round is completed four times a year. Rabbi Yisrael Salanter had it reprinted in Vilna and urged it on his talmidim, and it has been part of musar learning since.

TorahSages has the Cheshbon HaNefesh in the Warsaw 1894 edition, 224 sections, from the author’s hakdama through his teaching on the middot.
