הרב אבימי בריה דרבי אבהו

Avimi son of Rabbi Abbahu

An amora, Avimi son of Rabbi Abbahu, who taught on the days of Mashiach and on honoring one's parents.

Biography

Avimi son of Rabbi Abbahu was an amora, known as the son of the sage Rabbi Abbahu. He appears in the Gemara teaching baraitot on a range of subjects. In Sanhedrin he brings a teaching on the duration of the days of Mashiach for Israel, drawing on a verse from Yeshayahu.

In Kiddushin he teaches a striking lesson about honoring one’s parents: a person may feed his father pheasant and yet be punished for it, while another may set his father to grinding at the mill and merit reward thereby — the measure being the manner and spirit in which the mitzvah is fulfilled. He is also mentioned in Ketubot in connection with a matter of money owed and the repayment of a loan through an agent, raising the question of an outstanding document.

אבימי בריה דרבי אבהו היה אמורא ארץ ישראלי בן הדור הרביעי, חי בסביבות שנת 323 אחה"ס.
