Biography
Bebai ben Abaye — his name appears also as Bevai bar Abaye — was a Babylonian amora of the fourth and fifth generations, in the fourth century of the common era, and the son of the great Abaye. His contemporaries were Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak, Rav Kahana, Rav Pappi, and Rav Huna the son of Rav Yehoshua.
Abaye came from the house of Eli the Kohen, upon which a decree of early death had been laid, and Rav Pappi and Rav Huna the son of Rav Yehoshua would often tease Bebai on this account — that one who came from short-lived stock brought forth short-lived, untenable arguments. He seems to have led a withdrawn and contemplative life, and the Gemara relates a number of unusual stories about him. He served as the presiding judge in Pumbedita, the city where his father had headed the yeshiva.
Where traditions differ. Some chronologists identify him with Bevai bar Avin, but the generations do not match: Bevai bar Avin was a fellow talmid of Rav Yosef, while Bebai ben Abaye was a contemporary of Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak.
