Biography
Ezra the Scribe (עזרא הסופר) belongs to the earliest era of the Sages. He is best known as the figure who, together with his court, established the fixed wording of the blessings recited by all Israel. As the Chayei Adam brings, “all the blessings set in the mouth of every Israelite were ordained by Ezra the Scribe and his court,” and it is forbidden to alter, add to, or subtract from them.
Also known for the great public Torah reading in which Ezra stood upon a wooden platform to read before the people, with six men standing at his right and six at his left, as recorded in Nechemiah. The Gemara in Megillah connects the six men called to the Torah on Yom Kippur to those who stood beside Ezra, and Yoma cites the verse of Ezra standing on the platform in a discussion of pronouncing Hashem’s explicit Name, treating it there as a temporary measure dictated by the hour.
He worked tirelessly to bring Jews back from the Diaspora to Israel after they were permitted to return from Bavel (Babylonia).

Ezra is the main character of the Book of Ezra. According to the Hebrew Bible, he was an important Jewish scribe (sofer) and priest (kohen) in the early Second Temple period. In the Greek Septuagint, the name is rendered as Ésdrās, from which the Latin name Esdras comes. His name is probably a shortened Aramaic translation of the Hebrew name עזריהו, meaning "Yah helps".
