Biography
Rabbi Yosef ben Shmuel Bonfils, known by the Hebrew title Yosef Tov Elem, was a Rishon. He appears in the body of halachic literature as an authority whose views are cited in discussions of practical law.
In the laws of gittin (Even HaEzer 126), his name is associated with the requirements for a valid get — that it may be written in any script and any language, that its content clearly express that the husband divorces his wife and permits her to all, and that its wording be free of ambiguity that could be read in two ways. In the laws of Pesach (Orach Chaim 481), he figures in the discussion of the cups of wine at the Seder and the placement of Hallel HaGadol, where the practices of earlier authorities such as Rav Saadia and Rav Hai are weighed alongside the question of a fifth cup.

Joseph ben Samuel Bonfils was a French rabbi, Talmudist, Bible commentator, and payyetan of the mid-eleventh century. He is also known by the Hebrew name Yosef Tov Elem or “Tobelem”, a Hebrew translation from the French name "Bonfils."
