Biography
Rav Yosef Vidal ibn Labi was a Spanish chacham and darshan, son of the philosopher Rav Shlomo ibn Labi. He lived in Zaragoza, and was one of the twenty-five rabbanim called by order of the antipope Benedict XIII to stand for the Jews at the disputation of Tortosa, which ran from February 1413 to November 1414; there his power as a speaker marked him out among them.
He rendered into Hebrew, under the title Gerem HaMaalot, an Arabic work on plants and their use in medicine that had been composed by his teacher Yehoshua Lorki at the request of Shlomo Benveniste, whose children Lorki was then educating. Of the many other things he wrote, only a handful of poems and letters dealing with literary matters have survived.
Joseph Vidal ibn Labi was a Spanish Jewish scholar and orator, son of the philosopher Solomon ibn Labi. He lived at Zaragoza, and was one of the 25 rabbis who by order of antipope Benedict XIII assisted at the disputation of Tortosa, where he distinguished himself by his oratorical ability.
