Biography
Judah ben Yom Tov, Rabbi Yehudah ben Yom Tov (יהודה בן יום טוב), was one of the Baalei HaTosafot in Tzarfat and a great-grandson of Rashi.
He was the son of Rabbi Yom Tov of Falaise, son of the Rivan, Rabbi Yehudah ben Natan, who was Rashi’s son-in-law, and Rabbi Yosef was his brother. His wife was the widow of the Rivam, Rabbi Yitzchak ben Meir, brother of the Rashbam and Rabbeinu Tam and a cousin of his father. He had two sons, Rabbi Yitzchak and Rabbi Eliezer, and a daughter who married the Ri HaZaken, Rabbi Yitzchak of Dampierre. His grandson was Rabbi Yehudah Sir Leon. Manuscripts record that his son Rabbi Eliezer married Beila, the daughter of his brother Rabbi Yosef.
The Or Zarua brings a teshuvah of the Rashbam in which he discussed a question of halacha before the elders of Paris, among them a Rabbi Yehudah ben Tov; so Rabbi Yehudah most likely lived in Paris. He is cited in many places in Tosafot, and also in the Tosafot of Rabbi Shimshon of Sens (Tosafot Shantz) and in the Or Zarua.
