Biography
Rabbi Kalonymus ben Todros (d. c. 4954/1194) was a chacham of Provence and the Nasi of Narbonne, one of the great Torah communities of the south of France in the age of the rishonim. He stood at the head of the community in the second half of the twelfth century, and when the traveler Binyamin of Tudela reached Narbonne in 1165 he found Rabbi Kalonymus its leader. At a later period he led the community jointly with his cousin, Levi ben Moshe.
From letters addressed to him by Rabbi Sheshet Benveniste, preserved in manuscript, it appears that he passed away around 1194. The scholar Heinrich Gross identified him with a figure named in a Narbonne deed of 1195, a further trace of the standing his family — the house of the nesi’im of Narbonne — held in the city and beyond.
Kalonymus ben Todros was a hakham of Provence who flourished at Narbonne in the second half of the twelfth century. He bore the title Nasi and was the leader of the community when Benjamin of Tudela visited Narbonne in 1165. He and his cousin Levi ben Moses were joint leaders at a later time.
