Biography
Rav Abba bar Papi, called also Rav Ba bar Papi (niftar 5135/375), was an amora of Eretz Yisrael in the fourth generation. He is mentioned only in the Talmud Yerushalmi and in the midrashim that grew out of it, and these are the whole of what is known about him.
In aggadah he was a talmid of Rav Levi and a colleague of Rav Yehoshua d’Sichnin; many teachings of Rav Levi are brought in the Yerushalmi and in those midrashim in the names of the two of them together. In halachah he brings teachings in the name of Rav Chama bar Chanina, who was Rav Levi’s own rebbe. Together with Rav Yudan and Rav Mana he learned before Rav Yosi bar Zevida, and he was a friend of Rav Abba Mari and of Rav Yitzchak bar Nachman. Teachings of his in both halachah and aggadah are brought in his name in various places in the Yerushalmi.
Where traditions differ. Some identify him with Rav Abba HaKohen bar Papa, while Rav Aharon Hyman counts that sage as an amora in his own right. Rav Hyman also rejects the suggestion that he was a son of Rav Papi, since the yeshivot of Eretz Yisrael were flourishing in his day and no longer stood in Rav Papi's.
