Rabbi Chananya ben Chakinai

Rabbi Chananya ben Chakinai, a tanna noted for his devotion to lengthy Torah study away from home.

Biography

Rabbi Chananya ben Chakinai was a tanna. A passage in tractate Ketubot brings a striking account of his dedication to Torah learning: at the close of the wedding feast of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, he set out for the study hall. Rabbi Shimon asked him to wait so they could travel together, but he did not wait. He went and sat for twelve years in the study hall, and by the time he returned the paths of his town had so changed that he no longer knew the way to his own home.

Hanina ben Hakinai or Hanania ben Hakinai was a Tanna of the 2nd century; contemporary of Ben 'Azzai and Simeon the Yemenite. Sometimes he is cited as "ben Hakinai".
