רבי חנינא בר פפי

Rabbi Chanina bar Pappi was an amora of the Land of Israel. He is remembered as a model of personal righteousness: in a discussion in Kiddushin (81a), when Rav and Rav Yehudah debate who may be considered above suspicion in matters of conduct, it is Rabbi Chanina bar Pappi and his colleagues who are named as the example of truly righteous men whose self-control could be relied upon.

He appears among the sages of the study hall, sitting together with Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha in the courtyard of Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha (Yevamot 48b), where they take up a case concerning a town in the Land of Israel whose slaves refused to be circumcised. These passages place him in the company of leading amoraim and reflect both his standing in learning and his reputation for piety.
