רבי חנינא בן פזי

Rabbi Chanina ben Pazi

Rabbi Chanina ben Pazi was an amora whose teachings appear in the midrashic works on the Torah.

Biography

Rabbi Chanina ben Pazi was an amora active in the Land of Israel. His teachings are preserved chiefly in the aggadic midrashim, where he appears as one voice among the sages weaving meaning out of the verses of the Torah.

In the midrash on Ki Tisa and in Shemot Rabbah he speaks about the building of the Mishkan, dwelling on the standing of the tribes and on Betzalel and Aholiav ben Achisamach of the tribe of Dan, teaching that no tribe stood greater in that work. His words are set alongside those of other sages such as Rabbi Adda bar Chiya. He is also found among the discussions recorded in Bereshit Rabbah, in passages touching on the births of the children of Yaakov and on the events surrounding Sedom, where his comments stand together with those of Rabbi Yudan, Rabbi Levi bar Chayata, and Rabbi Elazar.
