רבי אלעזר בן חנניה

Rabbi Elazar ben Chananya

Rabbi Elazar ben Chananya — first-generation tanna, son of Chananya ben Chizkiya ben Garon, linked to the later portion of Megillat Taanit.

Biography

Rabbi Elazar ben Chananya (in some sources, Eliezer) was a tanna of the first generation, who lived in the days of the second Beit HaMikdash; his father was Chananya ben Chizkiya ben Garon. The Mechilta brings his teaching on “Zachor et yom HaShabbat”: remember Shabbat from the first day of the week — if a fine portion comes into your hand, set it aside in honor of Shabbat. Chazal also attribute to him the arrangement of the later part of Megillat Taanit, the sefer from the days of the second Beit HaMikdash that lists the days of communal rejoicing on which fasting is forbidden.

רבי אלעזר (אליעזר) בן חנניה היה תנא שחי בתקופת הבית השני, בדור הראשון לתנאים. אביו היה חנניה בן חזקיה בן גרון.
