רבי אלעזר בן יהודה איש ברתותא

Rabbi Elazar ben Yehuda Ish Bartotha was a tanna active in Eretz Yisrael. In the cited passages he appears chiefly as one who brings rulings in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua, touching on the laws of purity, terumah, and the eve of Pesach.

In Pesachim he teaches, in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua, the practice for the fourteenth of Nisan that falls on Shabbat — that the chametz is cleared away before Shabbat, impure and doubtful terumah is burned, and from the pure portion enough for two meals is left to be eaten until the fourth hour. In Tevul Yom he addresses cases of dough and of vegetables of chullin cooked in oil of terumah that a tevul yom has touched, ruling — again in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua — that the whole was rendered unfit, a view set alongside that of Rabbi Akiva. His teaching on a tree that was uprooted but left with a root also reaches us in Orlah through Rabban Gamliel, who states it in his name.
