רבי פפייס

Rabbi Papias was a tanna who lived in the Land of Israel. He appears across several tractates, brought by name on matters of aggadah and halachah alike. In Sanhedrin, a teaching is given in his name reproving Chizkiyahu and his company, and Moshe together with the six hundred thousand, for not singing praise to Hashem—drawing a contrast with the praise spoken on their behalf, and citing verses from Shemot and the prophets to make the point.

In matters of halachah, he is brought in Nazir for testimony concerning one who accepted two terms of nezirut: how the days of shaving and the count of the second term are reckoned, with the thirtieth day counting toward the tally. In Beitzah he appears in a dispute over sifting flour on Yom Tov, where he and Rabbi Yehudah ben Beteira hold that one may sift, and all agree that if a pebble or splinter fell into the flour one sifts it out.
