רבי שמעון בן אליקים

Rabbi Shimon ben Elyakim

Rabbi Shimon ben Elyakim, an Amora recorded engaging with Rabbi Yochanan and Rabbi Elazar, and championing his student for ordination.

Biography

Rabbi Shimon ben Elyakim was an amora who appears in the give-and-take of the study hall, recorded in interactions with the great teachers of his time. In Sanhedrin he is shown sitting before Rabbi Yochanan and pressing to secure ordination for Rabbi Yosi ben Rabbi Chanina, a matter that had not been going smoothly. When Rabbi Yochanan asked whether anyone knew the halachah in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korchah, Rabbi Shimon ben Elyakim brought forward that this man knew it — and used the opening to urge that he be ordained first, which Rabbi Yochanan then did.

In tractate Ketubot he is recorded addressing Rabbi Elazar, who held that a certain support obligation could be met from movable property. Rabbi Shimon ben Elyakim cautioned him that, while he knew Rabbi Elazar was acting from compassion rather than strict justice, the students might see the ruling and fix it as binding halachah for the generations — a concern for how a lenient decision could harden into precedent.

רבי שמעון בן אליקים הוא אמורא בדור השני והשלישי לאמוראי ארץ ישראל.
