רבי שמעון איש המצפה

Rabbi Shimon Ish HaMitzpah was a tanna whose teachings touch on the order of the avodah in the Beit HaMikdash and on agricultural law. In tractate Yoma, the Gemara identifies him as the tanna behind the order of the daily Tamid offering and of the Yoma service itself, citing his rulings on how the blood is placed at the corners of the altar. The Gemara there weighs an apparent tension between two of his teachings on the sequence of these placements.

He also appears in the Mishnah in Peah, where it is related that he sowed a field before Rabban Gamliel, and that the question it raised was brought up to the Lishkat HaGazit (the Chamber of Hewn Stone) for a ruling. There the scribe Nachum brought a tradition he had received from Rabbi Mei’asha, who received it from his father, who received it from the Zugot.
