רבי טבלא

Rabbi Tavla was an amora whose name appears across several tractates of the Gemara, chiefly in matters of practical halachah. He is best known for the question he put to Rav concerning a suspended partition (mechitzah teluyah) — whether it permits carrying in a ruin (churbah) — to which Rav answered that a suspended partition permits only over water, since the Sages were lenient in the case of water. This exchange is cited repeatedly in Eruvin (12a, 16b, 48a, 86b), where it serves as a touchstone for the broader discussion of suspended partitions, and a parallel form of the question, addressed to Ravin, appears in Shabbat 101a regarding the case of a boat.

Rabbi Tavla also figures in episodes where his rulings carried decisive weight. In Bava Batra 111a he acted in accordance with Rabbi Zecharyah ben Hakatzav, prompting Rav Nachman to challenge him until the matter was clarified through Rav’s reported view. In Chullin 132b a litigant invokes that Rabbi Tavla had exempted him, again before Rav Nachman, and in Eruvin 102a he is recorded coming to Mechoza and observing a local practice without objection. Through these passages he emerges as a figure engaged in the give-and-take of practical decision and the application of established law.
